I Pulled Into Nazareth

I love music.

I love witty lyrics and soaring melodies and unconventional harmonies and a good bass line.

I love seemingly simple arrangements that are filled with small intricacies you can miss if you aren't paying attention.

I love discovering a new and well done cover of a long-loved song.

I love how, cliche as it sounds, music brings people together.

In church on Sunday morning, we sang songs of deep faith.  We were accompanied by an elderly man who's been playing the organ since before many of us were born, and by a young woman pregnant with her third child.  We sang old and sometimes dusty songs.  But they were soul-speaking words, which our voices sang loudly.  There is a deep Sabbath rest to be found in the great songs of faith sung together on a Sunday morning.

I watched the Grammy Awards on Sunday night.  Some of it was ridiculous - a look into a commercialized system that oft sacrifices the song that speaks to the soul for the song that will make a quick buck.  But some of the performances were soul-speaking.  And I was reminded that music brings people together and gives them a place to rest.
